OCIA is process designed for adults who, after hearing the mystery of Christ proclaimed, consciously and freely seek the living God and enter the way of faith and conversion as the Holy Spirit opens their hearts. By God’s help, they will be strengthened spiritually during their preparation and at the proper time will receive the sacraments fruitfully. The OCIA describes a process in which men and women are guided and accompanied as they awaken in faith and become gradually introduced to the Catholic way of life.
The OCIA process consists of four steps: Inquiry (Pre-catechumenate), Catechumenate, Purification and Enlightenment, and Mystagogia.
The distinctive history and spiritual needs of each person is taken into account, differentiating between the baptized and the unbaptized, the catechized and uncatechized. Through the OCIA process, each person is met where they are and drawn into the faith, just as the father stepped out and greeted the prodigal son, drawing him into his loving arms from wherever the son had come. The needs of mature, practicing Christians from other faith traditions are considered on an individual basis. As well, people from non-Christian faiths are welcomed and accompanied on their journeys to becoming Catholic Christian adults.
